Zhang Jian


Dr. Jian (Ronald) Zhang is an Associate Professor in the School of Transportation at Southeast University (SEU) in Nanjing, China. He serves as the Assistant to the Dean of the Joint Research Institute on Internet of Mobility, founded by Southeast University, China and University of Wisconsin at Madison (UW). Dr. Zhang is also the Executive vice Director of the Research Center for Internet of Mobility, Southeast University. He is currently serving as a member of the Intelligent Transportation Specialized Committee of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, a member of Information Work Committee of Jiangsu Comprehensive Transportation Society, a member of the Expert Committee of Intelligent Drive and Intelligent Traffic of the National Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Center, and Dr. Zhang is also a senior engineer of Connected Vehicle, and a member of ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers), CHTS (China Highway & Transportation Society), CoE-SUFS (Center of Excellence for Sustainable Urban Freight Systems), IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers), SAE International, SESC (Systems Engineering Society of China), TRB (Transportation Research Board), etc.


Dr. Zhang received a B.S. degree in Applied Mathematics from SEU in 2006 and a Ph.D. degree in Transportation Engineering from SEU in 2011, respectively. From 2009 to 2010, he visited University of Wisconsin at Madison as a visiting scholar supported by the China Scholarship Council Postgraduate Scholarship Program. After he attained his Ph.D. degree, he worked as a research assistant in Research Center for Internet of Mobility from 2011 to 2012 and was enrolled in Southeast University as a faculty member in the School of Transportation in April 2012.


Dr. Zhang’s recent research interests and areas include: Intelligent Scheduling for Public Transit (Analysis, Modeling and Simulation), Traffic Information System (Data Platform System Design, Highway Traffic Operation, Intelligent Highway), Traffic Big Data Technology and Data Center (LBS, Analysis and Traffic Application, Algorithm Design and Engineering Applications), and Connected Automated Vehicle Highway System (Internet of Vehicles, Vehicle-Infrastructure Coordination, Automated Vehicle, System Analysis and Control)


In these areas, Dr. Zhang has published over 120 peer-reviewed papers. He is the author of two textbooks on intelligent scheduling of public transit and frontier technology in traffic and Transportation. Dr. Zhang has co-authored about 50 journal papers and more than 70 referenced papers at national and international conferences. He co-authored 5 books on intelligent highways in China. He holds 6 Chinese patents, and has more than a dozen patents pending in China. Dr. Zhang has been actively involved in near thirty research projects (such as the National Basic Research Program of China, the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China, and the National Natural Science Foundation) and more than thirty consulting projects. As the leading principal investigator (PI), he has directed more than 7 research projects, including two National Natural Science Foundation Projects and one National Key R&D Program.
