Microplastic pollution-defined as plastic particles smaller than Smm-poses a criticalthreat to the ecological integrity and economic vitality of the Gulf Coast. Thispresentation highlights the collaborative initiatives of the Gulf Coast Center forAddressing Microplastic Pollution (GC-CAMP) at the University of South Alabama. Ourinterdisciplinary research framework spans a diverse portfolio: from quantifyingmicroplastic types and concentrations in wastewater facilities across Alabama,Mississippi, and Florida to engineering sustainable remediation solutions such as biochar-based adsorption We further explore technical advancements in analytical precision andthe circular potential of repurposing plastics for construction materials. This presentationalso provides insight into bridging engineering and environmental science, offering ascalable model for mitigating complex contaminants through regional synergy andtechnical innovation. This presentation will also provide information for studentsinterested in pursuing graduate studies (Masters or Ph.D.) at University of South Alabama.
ABOUT THE LECTURER

Prof. Shenghua Wu is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Coastal, and Environmental Engineering at the University of South Alabama. His research interests include construction materials (asphalt and concrete), sustainable pavements, resilience, plastic circularity, STEM education, and interdisciplinary approaches to addressing complex challenges. He has successfully secured over $12 million in research funding through competitive grants from organizations such as EPA, NOAA, NIST, NSF, and DOT. Dr. Wu has served as a panelist for multiple federal agencies, including NSF, DOE, NOAA, ACRP, and NCHRP, and editorial members for journals such as ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering and ASTM Journal of Testing and Evaluation.
