Artificial intelligent aided function recovery strategies of transportation infrastructures under natural hazards

INTRODUCTION

The well-being of modern urban communities is profoundly contingent upon the enduring functionality of an array of critical infrastructure systems (CISs). Such CISs have now become increasingly interdependent, so as to meet the soaring functionality demand. Contemporaneously, however, such an improvement has often been offset, in the sense that the interdependence within the globally interwoven modern CISs turns out to be paving the pathway for the local damage induced by disruptive events to spread rapidly and pervasively, as revealed by the in-situ observation on the real-world climate hazards, throughout the past few years.  In parallel, those observations have also demonstrated that the state-of-the-art disaster management systems in countries across the spectrum of wealth have been struggling to enable the expeditious post-disruption recovery, and thus deteriorated the resilience and sustainability of those affected regions. Against this backdrop, this presentation will introduce the post-hazard rapid response, which has emerged as a new, promising pathway towards the hazard resilience of CISs, at first. In particular, this presentation will then elaborate on how the latest breakthrough in artificial intelligence-capable machines (culminated in the development of AlphaGo) can be leveraged to establish the autonomous planning system of the multi-dimensional rapid response across those hazard-impacted urban communities, and ultimately, come up with a new blueprint for the future resilient CISs. In the end, the remaining hardship and potential challenge with respect to the pursuit of intelligent and resilient CISs will also be highlighted and discussed.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr Li Sun is an Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering, Cardiff University, where he has joined in 06/2023. Before joining Cardiff, he has been serving as a (Senior) Research Fellow at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering of University College London, since 11/2019. Prior to that, funded by the Swiss NSF Early Postdoc.Mobility Fellowship, he has been employed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Data Science Institute of Columbia University, from 03/2018 through 03/2019. Between 10/2012 and 09/2017, he was conducting his doctoral studies, at the Institute of Structural Engineering (IBK), ETH Zurich. His research focuses upon the development of the resilience and sustainability promotion tool of the future intelligent urban systems under a variety of climate hazards, by leveraging the latest advancement in the domain of civil engineering, computational complexity, and machine learning.
