Introduction to the Course (including objectives and requirements)

As a specialized course for undergraduates, thiscourse aims to help students understand the related knowledge of transportationsystem like road network design,urbantransportation assignment of dynamic traffic and parking management of statictraffic, planning and designing of pedestrian and bicycle system,public transportation system, the relationship oftransportation, environment and energy and Intelligent Transport System.

The course includes the following aspects:

1. Road Hierarchy,roaddesign,urban transportation network,trafficdistribution, urbanroad network gradation,network capacity

2. Vehicle parking surveytrafficimpact analysisroaddangerous point improvement and so on. Have a preliminary understanding ofurban static traffic through parking management and traffic impact analysis.Judge and improve the dangerous point by traffic management and treatmentmethod, know the causes of accidents and concept of conflict and accident.

3.Pedestrianand bicycle system planning & design, public transportation system; thefeatures and coordination of pedestrian system,bicyclesystem and public transport system

4. The influence of transportation system toenvironment and energy, ITS (Intelligent Transportation System); therelationship between transportation system and energy, environment; how toachieve operation of transportation system in a clean and efficient way.

5.Combinedwith teaching content and given cases, help students cultivate hands-on abilityand comprehensively understand the operation and management of transportationsystem.

 

Introduction to the Main Instructor:

William Young, Male, Professor,Doctoral Supervisor. Dean of Department of Civil Engineering,Monash University; has 36 years of teaching experience inMonash University; works as guest professor of Oxford University,Nanyang University,Karlsruheuniversity,Michigan State University and HongKong University;Invited expert ofEconomy and Transportation AdministrativeBureau in Australia.

Prof. Yong gotBachelor degree from University of NSW in 1970; got master's degree inManagement and MBA from Deakin University in 1997 and 1999 respectively; gotdoctor's degree from Monash University in 1982; got master's degree from MonashUniversity in 1990; devoted to the fields of interaction issues of Landutilization / Transportation / Environment,Problemparking,Engineering Management andeducation; cooperate with counterparts from Sweden, Hong Kong, Japan, Britain,Germany and Indonesia in international projects; works as reviewer of TheInternational Journal Transportation for 12 years; published more than 200papers; participated in the publication of 4 academic works on transportation;Won Royal Transport Association Prominent Contribution Award,Transportation Management Division Award, Alexander VonHumboldt Award and Outstanding Graduate Students in Monash University.

ProfessorWilliam Young has 36 years of teaching experience for undergraduates andgraduates and has carried out a series of distance education and short-termtraining course with different corporations. He served as dean of Department ofCivil Engineering in Monash University (1999-2007), Head of Institute ofTransportation1995-1997,Headof Institute of Transportation Studies in Monash UniversityMay.6th,1994,Responsible Officer of Engineering Management Department for undergraduate andcontinuing education2001-2007and President of Habitations Consultative Committee1997-2002.

 

ChenQian, doctor and instructor, has been engaged in the research, practice andteaching in the area of Transportation Planning and Management, specializing inthe emergency traffic control and mass transit planning and management. She hasparticipated in many projects of NNSF, National “Fifteen” Key Scientific andTechnological Projects, Program 973 and Program 863, and she has also joined inJiangsu high-tech projects, Jiangsu projects of social development as well asvarious technological projects committed by local governments. Besides, she haspublished in domestic and foreign core journals nearly 20 academic papers,co-compiled a textbook and got the second prize for Progress in Science andTechnology of the Ministry of Public Security.
