The 2nd National Teaching Symposium on Road Survey and Design was held in Jiulonghu campus, Southeast University, during July 23 to 24 jointly organized by the School of Transportation of Southeast University, Road Transport and Engineering College Teaching Steering Sub-committee, Ministry of Education and China Communications Press. More than 150 professionals from 86 universities and enterprises attended the symposium. Liu Xiaoming, vice minister of the Ministry of Transport, and Fang Shouen, chairman of the university council, Tongji University, sent the message of congratulations in their own names.
In the opening ceremony, Jin Baosheng, vice president of Southeast University and Sun Xi, director of publishing center for highway engineering, China Communications Press representing the organizers and sponsors delivered speeches respectively. The symposium arranged 5 keynote lectures, 7 presentations and 2 teaching salons covering textbook optimization, key and difficult contents, practical teaching, bilingual teaching, teaching resource construction, comparison of Chinese and foreign road design, guidelines and specifications, etc. Professors from universities nationwide, based on their rich and extensive teaching and practical experiences, shared their views on the course Road Survey and Design. Especially, experts from enterprises with great reputation , including Li Zhihai, deputy chief engineer of CCCC Highway Consultants Company, Ling Jiuzhong, chief engineer of China Design Group Company and Guo Tengfeng, deputy chief engineer of CCCC First Highway Consultants Company, presented wonderful lectures on the textbook evolution and future optimization suggestion, relations between highway slope design index, vehicle condition and safety that all impressed the participants deeply.
Another highlight could be found that the symposium just seamlessly followed the 4th National Teaching Seminar in Transportation Engineering which was also organized by the School of Transportation, Southeast University. These two sister seminar/symposium showed that undergraduate teaching is highly emphasized in the School of Transportation. Actually, the related teaching seminars/symposiums on some key courses like Road Subgrade and Pavement Engineering, Principles of Structural Design and Road Survey and Design were firstly launched or initiated by the School of Transportation, Southeast University. These teaching activities provided a planform for effective communications between teachers, professors from different colleges/universities and got recongnized by the colleagues nationwide.
