School of Transportation Participated in the World Transportation Congress (WTC2023) and Successfully Hosted Multiple Parallel Forums

On June 14-17, 2023, the World Transport Convention (WTC), sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Transport, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the Hubei Provincial People's Government, was held at the China Optics Valley Convention and Exhibition Center in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. The theme of this conference was Innovation, Low Carbon, Wisdom, and Sharing - More Sustainable Transportation. The conference fully showcased the innovative technological achievements and development models in the fields of sustainable transportation, green transportation, intelligent transportation, digital transportation, integrated transportation, intelligent construction, and the integrated development of transportation and energy in various countries around the world in recent years. More than 10,000 guests from the transportation industry and delegates attended the conference.

On the afternoon of June 14th, Tarek Sayed, our honorary professor and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, attended the opening ceremony and gave a keynote speech titled How Advanced Technologies Will Change Transportation Safety? at the World Transport Convention. Following the opening ceremony, he was interviewed by media outlets such as CGTV, Anhui TV, and the China Highway and Transportation Society.


On the afternoon of June 15th, the Sino-Japanese Academy Forum, hosted by the World Transport Convention Executive Committee and the Japanese Academy of Engineering, and organized by Southeast University's School of Transportation, was successfully held. The theme of the forum was Innovations in Transportation for Planetary Health: Perspectives on Carbon Emissions and Resource Cycling, focusing on the international hot topic of Planetary Health, especially its application in the field of transportation. The forum invited Japanese Academy of Engineering members, including Ryoji Hayashi, Nobuo Mimura, Tamon Ueda, and Takehisa Yaegashi, as well as Chinese Academy of Engineering members, including Desheng Jiang, Xiangsheng Chen, and Zongyu Gao, and foreign member of the Japanese Academy of Engineering, Professor Zhang Junyi, to give keynote speeches. The forum was hosted by Professor Zhang Junyi from our university, and welcome speeches were given by Mr. Liu Wenjie, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Highway and Transportation Society and Vice President of the International Road Federation, and by Ryoji Hayashi, President of the Central Branch of the Japanese Academy of Engineering, and Chen Jun, Chief Professor and Dean of the School of Transportation at Southeast University. The forum discussed carbon emissions in the transportation sector, explored solutions and determined future development directions, focusing on carbon emissions and resource cycling, closely related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and in-depth discussions on Sino-Japanese cooperation.

The parallel forum World Pedestrian Bridges and Landscape Innovation Development of the 2023 World Transportation Congress, hosted by Southeast University Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., was held concurrently. The theme of the forum was Bridge, City, People - Harmony and Symbiosis. Mr. Liu Wenjie, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of China Highway and Transportation Society and Vice Chairman of the International Road Federation, delivered the opening speech, and Dean Chen Jun of our institute delivered the welcome speech on behalf of the forum organizers. Well-known experts in the industry, including Academician He Jingtang and Academician Huang Wei of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Vice Chairman of China Highway and Transportation Society You Qingzhong, National Engineering Survey and Design Master Han Zhenyong, Deputy Chief Engineer Zhao Junli of China Communications Planning and Design Institute, and Professor Xiang Yiqiang of Zhejiang University attended the forum, as well as technical leaders from Dongguan Binhaibay, Shenzhen Qianhai Investment and Holding, China Communications Second Highway Survey and Design Institute, Tianjin Urban Construction Design Institute, Hebei Transportation Design Institute and other units. The forum was hosted by Cao Fei, Vice President of Transportation Planning and Design Institute. The forum invited six experts, including Academician He Jingtang, Professor Ding Jianming, Vice General Manager of Southeast University Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., Mr. Marc Mimram, President of French Marc Mimram Architecture et Ingénierie, Mr. Zhou Tao, Assistant President of Linton & Partners International and General Manager of Greater Bay Area Innovation Center, Ms. Deng Qing'er, Vice Chief Engineer of Tongji University Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., and Mr. Peng Yuancheng, Vice Chief Engineer of China Communications Second Highway Survey and Design Institute Co., Ltd., to give academic reports. The experts conducted in-depth discussions on the innovative design of landscape bridges and the harmonious coexistence of bridges, cities, and people, and built a high-end academic platform for sharing, exchanging and cooperating in the field of landscape bridge engineering, which has had a wide and far-reaching impact in the industry.


On the morning of June 16th, the Frontier and Practice Forum of Autonomous Transportation System was hosted by the Transportation Engineering Division of the World Transportation Congress (WTC) and Southeast University. Professor Chen Jun, Chairman of the Transportation Engineering Division of the WTC and Dean of the School of Transportation at Southeast University, presided over the meeting. Invited guests included Professor Li Dehong, Academician of the Singapore Academy of Engineering and Dean of the Joint Institute of Zhejiang University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Professor Jia Limin, Chief Professor of the National Key Laboratory of Rail Traffic Control and Safety at Beijing Jiaotong University, Professor Yang Xiaoguang, Dean of the School of Transportation Engineering/City Transportation Research Institute at Tongji University, Assistant Dean of Future Transportation Engineering Institute of Sichuan Digital Transportation Technology Co., Ltd., Director of Product Research Center, Director Yang Yang, and Professor Li Dawei, Secretary of the Transportation Engineering Division of the WTC and Deputy Director of the Department of Transportation Engineering at Southeast University. Members of the Transportation Engineering Division and representatives from transportation-related colleges and universities and industry units also attended the meeting. 

On the morning of the 16th, the International Forum on Vehicle-Road Cooperative Intelligent Transportation was successfully held. The purpose of this forum was to provide a platform for in-depth discussions and broad exchanges on how to lead the digital transformation and upgrading of transportation with cooperative intelligence. 


Our institute also organized an international student delegation to participate in a series of activities hosted by the China Scholarship Council, including the Perceiving China - Sustainable Transportation series, the Chinese and Foreign Students Academic Exchange Salon, and the interactive poster forum. Kamal Nasir Ahmad gave a lecture at the WTC2023 International Student Forum and shared his research results and experiences in the field of sustainable transportation. The international student delegation demonstrated the strong interest of Southeast University's international students in Chinese transportation and culture, highlighting the important power of academic exchange and cultural integration. Their active participation injected new vitality into the promotion of global academic cooperation and exchange, and also contributed to the development of sustainable transportation.


Over a hundred teachers and students from our university participated in the World Transportation Congress, conducting academic activities such as conference hosting, presentations, poster exhibitions, and interactions with enterprises in various venues, fully demonstrating the excellence of East China University of Science and Technology's transportation researchers. This kind of activity not only helps to promote academic exchange and cooperation but also contributes to the development of transportation in our country. We hope that transportation researchers from East China University of Science and Technology can continue to maintain their outstanding performance and make greater contributions to the transportation industry in China.
