INTRODUCTION

The transportation technology revolution, catalysed by Internet of Things (IoT) information and automation communication technology, presents a significant opportunity to reshape the structure and operational management of transportation systems. This transformation allows for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and system-of-systems approaches on a large scale, aimed at addressing complex transportation safety issues and chronic congestion. Meanwhile, it also poses challenges to traditional transportation engineering methodologies, particularly in adapting to advancements such as Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) and new disruptive data sources. This presentation aims to explore how these new transportation technologies redefine traditional engineering disciplines. It seeks to elucidate the trends and mechanisms behind these disruptive changes driven by information-rich physical transportation systems. Through real-world case analyses, the speaker will provide insights into the features of AI and emerging technologies in intelligent transportation applications. Additionally, recent research findings on adaptive collaboration and automated traffic control systems will be shared to illustrate practical implications.
